Introduction
Have you ever asked the question, how do i get started on my fitness? You find yourself day in and day out lost with no help and nobody to turn to? It turns out, you’re not alone! The majority of society don't actually know where to turn to for their fitness and health. For example first of the year everyone just joins the local gym in the hopes that maybe this year will be different! Maybe just maybe this is the year ill make my expectations become reality. You find yourself showing up with no accountability and nobody to keep you on track so naturally that first of the year fix is going to naturally phase off.
Benefits
It turns out there are many benefits to fitness and training, those include Improving our confidence, strength, mood and general wellbeing. Whatever your shape, doing regular exercise will help you feel fantastic in it. Here are a few tips to get you going:
It takes time
People come in the gym with the mindset that they’re going to change week 1, but bear in mind that change in any sort can take upwards of 8-12 weeks before ever seeing a change. I usually tell people to set aside at least 6 months before deciding to go another route or change to something else.
Start slow
Have you noticed how everyone jumps all in guns blazing day 1 out the door? They go from sitting on the couch to moving 5 days a week, some even 2x a day. What happens here is the possibility of burnout, and when that happens there is no way to turn back. Start with 2-3 things you want to change and stick to that. For example, start eating a little better than the previous day, start drinking more water, and start by working out every day or once every other day.
Do what you enjoy
Find the workout program that works for you. Find the gym and the people and the trainer that work for you. Just like shopping for anything else and comparing products, you have to do the same thing for your own fitness and health. Don’t just go to golds or orange theory because that’s where your friends go. You have to ask what makes you happy and ultimately what is going to keep you going in the long run. Because lets face it, we all know if we do not like something then we won’t continue it and the same is said for fitness. Fitness and health can be accomplished in many ways besides a treadmill or a stair stepper.
Stay hydrated and sleep
This is one of the most crucial parts. People feel they can just run their busy days getting by on coffee, then step foot in the gym and notice they’re drowsy, mouth dry, and feel low on energy. Our bodies being made up almost fully of water makes it very hard to workout and go about our daily lives without any actual water coming into the system. Secondly is sleep… that is the body's natural way of repairing itself. When we sleep our muscle fibers and blood go throughout the body to repair what has been broken. No sleep means no repair which means no growth. Try and get a solid 7-9 hours of sleep each night to grow.
Get Accountability and help
This by far trumps the others. Have you ever heard the saying that if you want to go far go with others? This same thing applies. Find a friend or several friends that want to go far with you and that have your same goals in their mind. Secondly find a trainer or coach that takes your goals and makes it their own. This is where you do your due diligence and make sure that you shop the product and business. Make sure that trainers' values and goals line up with your own. Make sure that what they do is in their own passion to see you win and they aren’t just showing up for the paycheck.
